A Letter from Ciara
If you're anything like me, you love being in the wedding industry but you see that your business is ever-changing.
Wedding Professionals (planners, photographers, make up artists, stationers, designers, florists, bakers etc) must always work to keep their calendars full by continually attracting new brides. And not just ANY BRIDE, but the elusive High-End Bride!
I started my wedding planning business 7 years ago knowing I wanted it to be my full time career.
Instead my wedding planning business was consistently losing money. I was already working two other jobs and I was totally burnt out. We racked up credit card debt just to pay our most basic bills. We were exhausted, depressed and felt like hamsters on a wheel, never getting ahead.
What was missing? I wasn't sure at the time …
So I gathered up all my faith and invested heavily in my sales, marketing and mindset education. Along the way I got the confidence to stop charging only $400 for wedding day coordination (which turned out to be less than minimum wage when I looked at how many hours I was spending). Instead I grew to be the kind of full time Wedding Planner I knew I could be by coming up with a fail proof plan to charge $10,000+ to plan a wedding (and I don't do "day of" anymore — oh ya!).
That fee may sound unreachable and shocking to you. Well I had my doubts at first too. I admit I was afraid I'd fail.
Ciara brought in a working fountain for this over the top Midsummer Night's Dream wedding.
But I trusted the marketing strategies and formulas I was learning could work for the wedding market once I applied what I knew about brides. Fortunately, I was RIGHT! I soon had brides saying YES to my new haute couture wedding planning programs. Best of all I was making truly authentic connections with brides who were my flavor so it was a dream to plan weddings with them.
I'm now entering my 8th year of business with my 1 year old son added to the mix and I'm focused on continuing to grow my business not just for the sake of growth but in a sustainable way that gives me more time with my son and the ones I love.
I'll be honest and say I used to care about the number of figures I saw on my tax return each year but what's really important about earning a good income isn't that it's 5 figures, 6 figures or 7 figures… it's that it allows you to spend your time with the people you love, doing things that are really fun, and affords you the opportunity to give back to the world in a meaningful way.
I've had a lot of accomplishments in my business:
- I plan weddings in some of the most beautiful locations in the world.
- I work with high-end vendors I've met at previous conferences and thought I could only dream of working with (like Sylvia Weinstock, the Legendary Cake Designer).
- I bring in décor that makes guests gasp — like an 80 foot red velvet drape that was used on American Idol.
- I fill rooms with sparkling chandeliers and make it magically snow.
- I've even had Sir Tom Jones perform at one of the weddings I planned!

But what touched me the most was when last year my staff entered my name into the Canadian Special Events, Event Professional of the Year and I was nominated as one of the top five Canadians last year in our industry. I didn't know they were putting my name in the running but it meant a lot to me that I'd inspired the people around me. That year I kept the business running and bringing in money to pay the staff all while having my first child and not being really sure how I'd manage it all.
Was it easy? Nope.
Have I made mistakes? You bet.
But I've learned massive lessons from my mistakes and course corrected quickly and I openly share these lessons with other wedding professionals.
This is not a get rich quick, make $X amount of dollars guaranteed magic pill promise.

Ciara Daykin
The Original Rockstar Wedding Planner
Ciara Daykin is the CEO of Firefly Occasions Inc. Ciara has a BA in Communications and Culture from the University of Calgary with a major in Leisure and Tourism. She also had a Latin American Studies diploma from the Collegio de Jalisco which she received while living and studying in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Ciara worked at the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences which plans the Canadian Juno Awards. She also worked for one of Canada's top promotional product companies working with clients such as GE and Heinz.
Ciara is an award winning event designer and a sought after speaker in the wedding industry. She has spoken in front of hundreds of wedding planners at events such as the Association of Bridal Consultants Annual Conference and the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada Annual Conference. Thousands of wedding planners follow Ciara's teachings via her coaching division Rockstar Wedding Planner.
Ciara started in weddings planning her own wedding. But that only fed into her long time addiction to Martha Stewart Weddings. With a love for all things wedding Ciara founded Firefly Occasions to bring the best of the wedding world to brides in Calgary and the surrounding areas. Ciara is known for out of the box ideas, design ideas that reflect the couple's personality and for being a master negotiator on behalf of the bride and the groom. Kristy Chenell
The Luxury Brand Expert
Known for her exceptional experience in the luxury market, Kristy Chenell has become one of the nation's leading experts in the wedding industry.
Kristy began her career at Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings, where she consulted with hundreds of wedding couples, planning weddings at five distinct wedding venues, four theme parks, and 17 resorts. This unique experience included in depth brand marketing, website re-design, creation of wedding planning guides, and the television premier of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Wedding Edition.
Kristy went on to heighten her wedding experience with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Leading her teams at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes and then when she opened The Ritz-Carlton, Denver, she wrote and produced a wedding planning book that was benchmarked by the company for its website. Shortly thereafter, Kristy became one of six people in the country to sit on The Ritz-Carlton Corporate Wedding Advisory Board, where she specialized in designing signature wedding planning experiences with preferred vendors.
Additionally, Kristy's experience ranges from working with celebrity dress designers Austin Scarlett and Ines DiSanto to Modern Bride Magazine. Kristy now consults for wedding vendors across the country on creating customized brands with creative, yet strategic marketing and sales strategies for the luxury market.
Ciara has worked with Kristy in creating a luxury brand for Firefly Occasions. The company was bringing in high end weddings based on the marketing Ciara had done but Ciara recognized that a part of sustaining that flow of luxury clientele was the strength of the brand. Melanie Roche
The Energy Healer

The Floral Magician
Born in Scotland, Ian Prosser has over 36 years of experience within the floral industry. Ian has won many design awards. Most recently, Ian won The Sylvia Cup Design Competition in 2008 for the Society of American Florists and the title of 2010 "Designer of the Year" for Event Solutions Magazine. He has been inducted into the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), The American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and Professional Floral Communicators International (PFCI). He is also a member of the FTD Design Team, which sends him around the country demonstrating, commenting, and teaching floral design to his peers. Ian has also had the honor of providing floral decorations for many dignitaries, celebrities and professional athletes, including members of the British Royal Family, Inc., HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Tom Cruise, Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys, and Presidents Bill Clinton and George W.Bush. In 2005, Ian was given the honor by the Society of American Florists to serve as "Floral Design Chairperson" for the second-term inauguration of President George W. Bush. He also was responsible for the décor for Grace Ormonde's book tour in Florida and has had a recent wedding featured in her magazine.
Tonya Shadoan
The American Wedding Magnate
Growing up in a small town, Tonya J. Shadoan knew there was more in her direct future when she moved to Indianapolis in '91. Obtaining a masters degree in education and theatre was just the first chapter in her life as she conducted Broadway productions for a local high school. Later as her passion grew stronger, she took the leap to open her business Circle City Planners. Today Tonya has found her true calling in life by teaching wedding professionals locally and internationally how to grow their business foundation.
Almost 9 years in the wedding business gave Tonya the hands on training she needed to launch several divisions of her thriving company in 2009. It became natural for her to take her signature and create a coaching program for professionals across the nation.
Tonya J. Shadoan is found as the "wedding expert" on a local and international level in her field. She just recently was asked to speak at the national conference for the Association of Bridal Consultants. She is an Accredited Bridal Consultant, a distinguished member of the Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) and a board member of International Special Event Society (ISES) where her company won a NATIONAL ESPRIT AWARD for BEST TEAM EFFORT 09 and BEST CREATIVE LOGISTICS 08.
